Shell Case Study

Shell is an international energy company with expertise in the exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil and natural gas, and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals. They operate in 70 countries, have 86,000 employees, have 21 refineries, produce 3.7 million barrels of oil per day with revenue of $305.2 billion in 2017.

Shell wanted to make it possible for their gas station customers in Europe to pay directly at the pump outdoors, or to be able to pay indoors with PayPal, AndroidPay, and ApplePay.  They needed a system that could work with their existing infrastructure without requiring expensive changes to existing hardware.

Cloud Payment’s platform connected Shell’s station payment infrastructure to the customer’s smart phone to enable payments both at the pump and at the counter without hardware changes. This was done by integrating a software financial switch within Shell’s own infrastructure, which enabled back-end communications between the user’s phone and the Shell systems without requiring physical interaction at the locations. Because of this solution, Shell was able to expand their pay at the pump program beyond credit cards to include mobile payments.

  • 454 stations in the Netherlands offer pay at the pump
  • 2213 stations in Germany offer pay at the pump
  • 10,484 stations in the US offer pay at the pump
  • There have been 1.5 million transactions in the EU
